Understanding Chronic Pain

There are many types of pains and one can readily be confused as to what is chronic pain. Chronic or continual discomfort is pain that endures for a duration lengthier than 12 weeks. The pain seems persistent even despite medication or treatment. Most people get back to normal after pain following an injury or operation but sometimes the pain carries on for a much longer duration of time without any specific reason. It may also appear without any history of an injury or operation.

Acute vs. Chronic Pain

Pain is a sign that something has happened or that something inside the body isn't right. Acute pain comes and goes as quickly as possible whereas chronic pain lasts longer than six months. It can also continue when the injury or illness has been treated.

What is pain?

Pain is an uncomfortable and uneasy feeling that occurs when there is something wrong with one's body. The uncomfortable or unpleasant feeling is rampant. The presence of pain often means that there's an utter lack of comfort. At times of chronic pain, resorting to pain relief pills can result in some sort of comfort.

The difference between acute and chronic pain

Acute pain usually comes on suddenly. It is also to be kept in mind that it is caused by something specific. It is sharp in its projection. Acute pain usually doesn’t last for a long period. Not longer than six months. It vanishes when there is no longer an underlying cause for the pain. The multiple causes of acute pain include:

     Surgery.

     Broken bones.

     Dental work.

     Burns or cuts.

     Labour and childbirth.

After acute pain goes away, you can go ahead with your life as nothing happened.

Chronic pain is pretty severe in its entirety. Chronic pain problems vary and this type of pain can continue even after the injury or illness that was the main cause behind it has healed or gone away. There's something with the pain signals that remain active in the nervous system for weeks, months or years.

Some of the chronic pain symptoms are as listed below:

     Headache.

     Arthritis.

     Cancer.

     Nerve pain.

     Back pain.

     Fibromyalgia.

Though the application of the best pain relief cream, pain relief gel and pain relief spray can of some use, they are not the permanent cure for chronic pain treatment.
